Like it or not, The 70’s are coming back into Home Decor; Let’s take baby steps & Makeover this Disco Era end table
Does the term “70’s” make you cringe as you think back to your younger days, in bellbottom pants and mock turtlenecks watching Saturday Night Fever, eating a TV dinner on the TV trays parked in front of the mustard colored Barcalounger? You are not alone. It has taken me a while to come to grips that those styles, especially the 70’s, are in fact, cyclical. I suppose after 40-some years of living, it was bound to happen; those once “good times” would make it’s way- full circle. And for all of my fellow 70’s folk, let me hold your hand as we cross “back” over to the dark side where browns, golds, and oranges are in fact friends. Don’t nod your head in denial, you cannot hide! If you haven’t already, leave your tan, travertine ways behind, and maybe… start thinking about even “gray” becoming a color of the past (GASP!!!) It is going to happen… that’s right, the 70’s are right around the bend coming for you and your precious shiplap! DUN DUN DUNNNNNN!
Ok, so the initial idea of brown and gold together… yeah, it’s bad. I shutter at the vision of avocado colored boucle, Raggedy Anne dolls, shag carpet, and Pig’s In A Blanket. Mr. Rogers and Lily Tomlin in the big giant chair… AHHHHHH! Okay, but let’s look at some good things like high waisted pants (great comeback!), loungy furniture, patterned tile, macrame and floral patterns; these are just a few and I would welcome back BIG TIME! The thing about styles coming back when we are older (and wiser) is “WE” are the ones who get to dictate matters of the home. Hear me out. Generally speaking, younger generations tend to bring a style back from a ‘“fashion” standpoint, maybe a music standpoint and maybe, if I stretch, in the “crafting” department too. But it is us, middle aged (I laugh just writing that, but I correct myself as I am a LOUD AND PROUD middle ager) that dictate home decor such as Kitchen, Bathroom and Master Bedroom Makeovers. So scooch on over young’ins, mama has some 70’s remakin’ to get goin’ on. Seriously, we need to rally or we will end up in one of those houses or even worse, wardrobes of your Aunt Doris, the one who (stylistically speaking) never made it past 1963.
It’s going to take baby steps. We will all go very slow but we will do it together. Just to give you a little inspiration, here is my bold attempt to conquering the times… with a $15 flea market end table. See, babysteps!
With all kidding aside though, I really do love how this turned out. I was certain, it was a hard “no” to the chrome, so I used an antique bronze. I also wasn’t ready for straight dark oak, so I lightened things up using a weathered version to tone things down. The gray glass, I am not going to lie, I have always loved that, so that was easy to swallow. I sincerely love it though!
No pressure to change. You can go at your own pace. However, I hope I have planted the seed because, like it or not, ”it’s a comin!”
